Kindergarten Music
Instructor: White, Marnie

Welcome to the Aspen Elementary School Music Website!

The AES music program engages students in a variety of musical activities which are designed to develop their musical “intelligence” while enhancing and supporting the academic curriculum. Our program is based on the Kodaly music education methodology. Our program is aligned with the Colorado State music standards, and also enhances 21st century skills with critical thinking, collaboration and creativity.

Students will develop rhythmic and melodic literacy, including performing, reading and writing these concepts. They demonstrate this literacy through singing and playing instruments, developing abilities that will enable them to continue on the musical instrument (including voice) of their choice in middle school and high school. Students develop mastery of reading, writing and performing age-appropriate music in our program.

All children attend music class for 30 minutes every three days. Your child will be an active participant in the Colorado State Music Standards, which include singing (alone and with others), playing instruments (alone and with others), creating music, listening and evaluating music (including the correct use of vocabulary), and relating music to various historical and cultural traditions.

What does that all really mean?

Now that your Kindergartener has been in music for a semester, s/he can describe music based on the "tempo" (fast/slow), the "dynamics" (loud/soft), and the "pitch" (high/low)! S/he also knows those three "fancy music words" (tempo, dynamics and pitch) and can use them in our discussions! These three concepts, plus duration (long/short) will are the foundation of all musical skills. S/he has also learned how to use his/her voice in many different ways, and is working or has met the goal of matching the teacher's pitch so that everyone can sing in tune in their head voice; my goal is for everyone can become tuneful singers.

In second semester music, Kindergarten students will continue to work with tempo, pitch and dynamics, and learn about duration and steady beat. Late in the semester, we will learn our first real music notation and begin reading very basic rhythm patterns. We will continue working with small percussion instruments, including tone bar instruments such as the xylophone. Students will experience opera, orchestral works, and discuss the tone color of voices and instruments.
Most importantly, we'll be singing, playing, and having a lot of fun!
